Your go-to Handbook for buying a 500-Watt Inverter

In today’s world, when we’re so dependent on electricity, it’s tough to imagine even a few hours (let alone an entire day) without it. From the moment we wake up till the time we go to sleep, and even while we’re asleep, we’re surrounded by some or the other application of electricity.

In such a scenario, power cuts can be a real hassle. Not only can they cause discomfort, but they can also disrupt our day-to-day, causing major inconvenience. This is why power backup solutions have become incredibly popular, especially in a country like ours that faces frequent long power cuts.

While there are a bunch of options available when it comes to power backup solutions, inverters have become a preferred choice thanks to the convenience and practicality they offer. However, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind before investing in an inverter.

The first (and foremost) of these factors is power capacity. This refers to the maximum power requirement the inverter can cater to. While this would ideally depend on your needs and the power appliances you’d want to run during a power outage, a 500-watt inverter is typically suitable for most homes.

So, if you’re on the lookout for a 500-watt inverter, here are a few factors that you can consider in order to make the right choice.

Type of Inverter

The primary aspect to keep in mind while going for a 500-watt inverter is its type. There are three types of inverters that you can choose from –

  • Pure Sine Wave: This is the most effective choice for homes and shops. This is because these inverters can adjust voltage settings based on your requirement and offer an uninterrupted supply of electricity.
  • Modified Sine Wave: These inverters are not that commonly used in homes and offices as they take several minutes to kick in and do not provide as smooth a transition as a pure sine wave inverter.
  • Square Wave: While these inverters aren’t as effective as sine wave inverters, they’re available at a slightly lower price point.

VA Rating

The next factor to consider while buying a 500-watt inverter is the VA rating. It is the voltage and current delivered to the device by the inverter. If an inverter performs at 100% efficiency, the power required by the electrical devices and the power supplied by the inverter is the same. However, the efficiency of most inverters ranges from 60% to 80%. This efficiency, also known as an inverter’s power factor, is simply the ratio of power required by appliances to power supplied by an inverter. Most inverters have a power factor of 0.6 to 0.8.

Power provided (or inverter VA rating) = Power need (watts consumed by the equipment) / Power factor (efficiency).

Battery

The battery is the most important element of an inverter. It determines the functionality of the inverter and allows it to function at the best of its capacity. The best idea is to opt for an inverter and battery combo to make sure your devices are perfectly compatible.

If you’re buying a battery separately, make sure that it is of the right capacity. To do this, determine the total power requirement of your home during an outage and estimate the duration for which you’d need the inverter to run. Next, multiply the two to calculate the total power requirement and divide the number by 12 (for a 12V inverter). This would be the capacity of your batter (denoted in Ah)

Brand

Another important factor to consider while buying a 500-watt inverter is the brand. It’s advisable to opt for a reputed brand to make sure you’re getting your hands on high-quality, durable products that offer great value.

Once you have considered all these factors to buy a 500-watt inverter, you are good to go.
