What is the 150ah Battery Backup Time? Here’s How to Calculate it

Calculating inverter/UPS battery backup time is not rocket science. All you need to be aware of are a few parameters upon which the 150Ah battery backup time is dependent. These parameters are power consumption, the power of the load, and the battery capacity.   

Generally, an inverter battery is expected to last around 5 to 10 hours when fully charged. However, you can also calculate the accurate 15Ah battery backup time with the formula below.  

Backup Time (hours) = Battery Capacity (Ah) * Input voltage (V) / Total Load (Watts) 

Let’s take a hypothetical situation wherein you have an inverter battery with a capacity of 150Ah and an input voltage of 12V. Say you want to run two fans, two tube lights, and 1 Wi-Fi router on the inverter battery. Let’s apply the formula to find out how long your appliances can run in this scenario:  

  • 2 fans = 75*2 = 150 Watts  
  • 3 lights = 40*3 = 120 Watts  
  • 1 Wi-Fi router = 1*20 = 20 Watts  

Therefore, the sum total of the load in your case is 150 + 120 + 20 = 290 Watts  

Now, in the final stage, let’s apply all these values in the formula.  

Backup Time (hours) = 150 X 12/290 = 6.2 (approx.)  

Hence, in this case, the 150Ah battery backup time is approximately 6.2 hours, i.e., it can power your devices for 6.2 hours when fully charged.

How Does Battery Capacity Affect Inverter Backup Time?

Let’s keep all the values the same as above except the battery capacity and then figure out how the inverter battery backup time can be affected by the battery capacity.  

i. In case the battery capacity is 110Ah

Backup time = 110 X 12/290 = 4.5 hours (approx.)  

Hence, you will get a battery backup of 4.5 hours if the capacity of your inverter battery is 110Ah.  

ii. In case the battery capacity is 220Ah

Battery Backup time = 220 X 12/290 = 9.1 hours (approx.)  

In this scenario, your inverter battery can power your appliances for 9.1 hours.  

These two examples make it clear that your battery’s capacity significantly determines your battery backup time. That is to say, the greater the battery capacity, the higher the battery backup time will be.  

How to Improve Your 150Ah Battery Backup Time?

Here are four ways you can improve your power backup UPS system:  

1. Avoid Rusting and Corrosion

Since corrosion depreciates the performance of your inverter battery by reducing its current flow, it is essential to always keep it rust/corrosion free.   

2. Do Not Overload

During a power cut, if your inverter battery is overloaded, it would lower the backup time. Therefore, it is preferable to disconnect all those devices that are not needed on an urgent basis but are consuming a lot of energy.   

3. Use Energy-Saving Gadgets

Using energy-saving devices can be a great idea to reduce power consumption. For example, use LED bulbs instead of traditional tube lights or bulbs, as it minimizes almost 75% of power consumption. 

4. Check Water Level

Check the water level of your inverter battery at least once every two months. Note that the water level should remain between the minimum and maximum limits.
